We got our first hands-on experience with the Samsung Galaxy A72 at an exclusive event held by Samsung Malaysia. Apart from the Galaxy A72, we were also offered a chance to try out the Galaxy A52, and Galaxy A32 as well. Being the successor to the Galaxy A71, the Galaxy A72 is a major upgrade from the internal hardware down to the exterior aesthetics. Here’s our first impression of the device, where we cover initial thoughts we have on the device. As for the specs and details, we’ll get into that in the full in-depth review.
Samsung Galaxy A72
Design
The Samsung Galaxy A72 features a slim body, and a very smooth matte haze finish on the back. The one that caught our eye is the one in the Awesome Violet colourway, and it just looks the best among all the other colours. The back feels smooth, yet it provides the right amount of grip. Because it has a matte finish and it isn’t at all glossy, any fingerprint smudges on the back are practically invisible.
The camera bump has been altered as well, as it takes design cues from the Samsung Galaxy S21 series’ camera system. Instead of having a clear cut distinction from the bump and the phone’s chassis, the Galaxy A72’s camera bump flows and blends into the back of the phone, making it look more elegant and natural.
The slightly curved edges on the side makes the phone feel comfortable to be held in the hand. On the right, there is the power and volume buttons, while the top has only the SIM tray, and the bottom houses the USB Type-C port, speaker system, and the 3.5mm audio jack.
The Samsung Galaxy A72 is also IP67-rated for water and dust resistance. During the event, Samsung fully submerged the device in a fish tank. According to the company, the device can last under 1m of fresh water for 30 minutes. We did try washing, and submerging our unit in a bowl of ice water, it came up with no issues as well.
Display
The display also got an upgrade whereby it now uses an AMOLED panel, and has a higher refresh rate of 90Hz instead of 60Hz. Having the AMOLED panel would mean a more efficient battery management, even if it isn’t an LTPO display (variable refresh rate). But, we’re a bit puzzled why Samsung didn’t go straight for the 120Hz refresh rate. Maybe they’re reserving the 120Hz for the flagship Galaxy S and Note series.
Scrolling feels a lot smoother, even if it’s just a 30Hz increase in refresh rate. There’s minimal screen tearing, and the AMOLED panel truly displays vivid colours, especially on the One UI 3.1’s icons. Videos on the device’s display looks great too.
Camera
The camera UI on the Samsung Galaxy A72 is similar to the ones found on the Galaxy S21 series. It’s quick on its feet when you switch between modes, but the shutter button does have a little delay when you’re trying to take quick multiple shots. Single Take 2.0 is also onboard, which is great. We’re going to need more time to review the camera performance.
Audio
The Samsung Galaxy A72 does have a dual speaker setup, and it can go really loud without any distortion. During initial test, vocal performance is great and there’s pretty good sound isolation too. However, it does lack bass, as you can only hear its faint existence in the background.
Conclusion
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A72 is a very promising device, and we’re already excited for what it has to offer. While initial testing seems positive, we’ll need to spend just a little more time with the device to get to know it better, and to provide a better review. So, stay tuned to The AXO for the in-depth review!
