Design

Huawei Matebook 14s

The Matebook 14s we have comes in a Space Grey colourway. Simple yet elegant unpolished CNC texture makes it comfortable to hold and touch. It is weighing approx 1.43kg which is considered lightweight for a laptop with a touch screen display. The top lid has the huawei brand name etched on it. Giving it a minimal yet elegant touch. There are two strips of rubber bar lifting the bottom of the laptop for better airflow and to prevent it from slipping from surfaces.

Display

Opening the laptop, you’ll notice the clean and clear display that takes up most of the space of the top lid. The Matebook 14s features a 90% screen-to-body ratio FullView Display. The 2520 x 1680, 213 ppi display can render 1.07 million colour with support of 100% sRGB colour gamut. Watching videos are pure pleasure with the vibrant details and clarity of display. However, the display only supports up to 90hz display refresh rate.

On the side note, the display has touch support which allows you to navigate around more efficiently.

User Experience

Huawei Matebook 14s

Using the Huawei Matebook 14s is a pleasant experience. From the smooth texture of the chasis to the touchpad and keyboard, working around with it is simply comfortable. Starting up to launching an software is seamless. Open the lid, unlock the device with the fingerprint on/off button and viola you are good to run your daily task no matter its for work or studies. The clear display is a plus for viewing documents and presenting them to others in vibrant details while navigating using the touch screen instead of fumbling through the touchpad.

The display is supported by smart brightness adjustment and dual eye comfort to reduce blue light to the eyes. Even with long period of working or studying on the Matebook 14s your eyes would not feel fatigue from it.

Past Huawei laptops tends to hide its webcam under the Fn key. However, for the Matebook 14s the webcam is moved back to top of the screen with a better camera angle for video conferences.

You are now able to enjoy mobile apps that are available on Huawei AppGallery on the laptop. Although it is still in beta version, it is convenient for those whom want to play mobile games on a bigger screen.

Huawei Share is one of the top feature for those whom are on the Huawei ecosystem. If you own a Huawei device, you are able to extend or collab screen between the laptop and mobile device. Using the mobile phone as an external drawing pad for the Matebook 14s is rather convenient. Apart from that, the Huawei share allows you to drag and drop files across pc and tablet. Transferring files has never been easier. In the collaboration mode, the tablet or mobile phone can even be used as the laptop’s keyboard and mouse.

Performance

Huawei Matebook 14s

Packed with the new Intel Evo 11th Gen processor, the laptop is able to handle task such as graphic design and video editing. Running a few software at the same time for multitasking would not be a problem at all. The variant we have comes with 16GB RAM and 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD which is more than enough to handle heavy work load. By pressing the Fn +P shortcut, it will turn on the laptop’s performance mode for those who need the extra power to run heavy duty software.

Equipped with 2×2 MIMO dual antenna with a Wi-Fi 6 Network card, the supports fast transfer speed and gives us a stable internet surfing experience. Streaming shows and music non-stop has been smooth so far.

The Huawei Matebook 14s houses their Shark Fin Fan that improves airflow and designed for better cooling. Despite having such powerful cooling system, the fans are so silent that you can barely hear them.

Battery Life

Huawei Matebook 14s

Huawei Matebook 14s comes with 60Wh battery. You can play videos on it for almost a full day without the need to charge. The 90Wh charger that is given is so small in size that allows you bring it around easily. If you are down on battery, you can charge the laptop for 15 mins and use it for simple task for as long as 3 hours. If you did not bring your charger along with you, you can just pop any usb c cable with a power bank or charger head to charge up your Matebook 14s.

Conclusion

For the price of RM 6,699, it is quite worth the investment for a daily driver. However, there are certain features that you will not be able to enjoy if you are not using a Huawei tablet or smartphone already. It is quite similar to how you are not able to sync your android phone to a Macbook due to the OS difference. The advantage would be that you will still be on the Windows OS.

The only thing I wished they have on the Matebook 14s would be the 120Hz refresh rate display which would make the device perfect and affordable for the price point it is at.

For those whom are interested, you can purchase the laptop through Lazada, Shopee and Huawei Online Store.
