One of the reasons why I love the Dell U2421E is that it has a full range of ergonomic features:

  • Pivot
  • Swivel (45-degrees / Left and Right)
  • Tilt (5-degrees to user / 21-degrees away from user)
  • Height Adjustment (Up to 50.8cm)

It’s extremely versatile, and as long as I have my cable management done right, I can easily change the orientation of the screen with a single turn.

The Dell U2421E has an anti-glare matte finish 3H Hard Coating on the front, with very minimal bezels on the edge. The base, shaft, and the rear of the monitor has a matte silver finish. The base is rather large, but it does add to the overall sturdiness and stability. The shaft has a hole cutout towards the bottom for cable management, and it can be removed should you wish to use the monitor in a wall mount setup (VESA standard).

On the bottom rear, you will also find the power button, as well as a control joystick to control the OSD menu for the monitor’s settings. Underneath the groove, you will find the full range of connectivity ports the Dell U2421E has to offer. There is the AC power port, HDMI port, two DisplayPort (1 x in, 1 x out), USB Type-C (DisplayPort) port, four USB 3.0 downstream port (two on the left side of monitor), audio line-out port, RJ-45 connector, and a stand lock. Included in the box is a power cable, USB-C to C cable, and a DP to DP cable.

The Dell U2421E has a 23.8-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution IPS LCD panel, which has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a peak brightness of 250nits. The display isn’t very bright, so I did have issues with it because I was sitting right beside the window. The only way I could remedy that is to angle it inwards, away from the source of light, or shut the curtains.

I like that colours are vivid on the monitor, be it watching movies, YouTube videos, or even gaming. Blacks are fairly black, and there aren’t any light bleeding from the edges too.

In terms of colour accuracy, the Dell U2421E is calibrated for Delta E<2, which is also about 99% of the sRGB colour space, and it also covers 85% of the DCI-P3 colour space. When it comes to refresh rate, we’re a little disappointed it only had a 60Hz refresh rate for the price. Sure, office work doesn’t require 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate, but it would’ve been nice to have.

A couple of things to note is that the DisplayPort output is great for multi-monitor setup with Dell Express Daisy Chaining feature. The single USB-C port serves as an additional video input, as well as to transmit data and power supply of up to 65 watts. That means it can charge your laptop, all while receiving visuals from your laptop. I’ve tried charging my JOI Book SK3000, and it worked fine.

Another thing that comes in handy is the RJ-45 connection. So, when my laptop is connected to the monitor, I could access the Internet immediately without relying on Wi-Fi. The monitor also acts as a docking station for laptops, as it has MAC Address pass-through, PXE boot, and even Wake-on-LAN built right in.

User Experience

Dell UltraSharp 24 U2421HE USB-C Monitor Review

On a day to day basis, the Dell U2421E works great. Web browsing and article writing looks decent, while photo and video editing tasks are great too. It’s a pretty straightforward monitor, but comes with extra features that make it a worthwhile purchase. It gets rid of a lot of cables because the only connection you’d need is to the monitor itself, e.g. charging my laptop.

One gripe I have with the monitor is that it only has a standard 60Hz refresh rate. Again, I understand that high refresh rate is overkill for an office monitor, but it’s 2021, and I think a monitor like this should at least have 120Hz refresh rate onboard. In the next iteration maybe, Dell?

In terms of ergonomics, the Dell U2421E is great as it’s very versatile. It can easily be positioned to however you want it to be. The adjustment movement is smooth, however if you’re thinking of moving the monitor around, do know that it is quite heavy.

Dell UltraSharp 24 U2421HE USB-C Monitor Review

Dell monitors have always been priced a little on the high side, the same goes for the Dell U2421E USB-C monitor. However, there’s a reason for the pricier price tag. The monitor has a set level of build quality and assurance, that it will last for years to come. While the display may not have a high refresh rate, it does have an IPS panel that showcases beautiful and vivid colours.

The USB 3.0 hub and the USB Type-C port really adds a whole level of convenience to the Dell U2421E. You can literally offset all your USB peripherals to the monitor instead, even the charging of your laptop as well. That means, all you need to plug in to your laptop is just one cable, and that’s the USB-C cable.
