Xbox Series X

Just a few months ago, Microsoft finally revealed the Xbox Series X. Dubbed as the company’s fastest, most powerful console ever, the Xbox Series X is set for a release this holiday season.

Microsoft has defined the Xbox Series X by its three primary characteristics – Power, Speed, and Compatibility. Why these three specifically?

Gamers today demand a lot of things from their gaming consoles. They want “next-gen graphics” or “more power” in their gaming experience. Microsoft took it to themselves to work with AMD in making the Xbox Series X the most powerful console ever. Not only did they come up with a next-gen console that could run games in 4K at 60fps, they pushed themselves even harder to include support for up to 120fps for even more demanding game titles.

Xbox Series X internals

Microsoft and AMD worked together to pack the Xbox Series X with an 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU, paired with an RDNA 2-class GPU. That’s a serious amount of firepower stuffed in a little (size is subjective) black box.

Following the AMD presentation, Andrew Goossen took the reins to dive deeper into the tech nitty and gritty of what will power the Xbox Series X. Here’s the full specs list below.

Here’s how it could look like:

Shadows from objects turn from soft to hard and vice versa, depending on how far away you are from the object. The lava at the back even gives an orange glow that dissipates over distance and reflects onto the rails. Even the moon casts its own rats. Even light can now be passed through transparent objects such as glass and… water!

What players will notice is that load times will be much faster. Contact shadows and self-shadow lighting on plants and grass make every scene feel more realistic.

The company also mentioned that those who have the Xbox One version of Gears 5 will receive an Xbox Series X Optimized Version of Gears 5 at the Xbox Series X launch. This will leverage Smart Delivery depending on which console you’re using.

The next major feature of the Xbox Series X is speed. Which is why Microsoft has opted to go with SSDs now. By combining that with the Xbox Velocity Architecture, it features tight integration between hardware and software that optimizes streaming of in game assets.

This is where the new Quick Resume technology comes in. With Quick Resume, you’re able to resume multiple games with the press of a button. Do that, and you’re instantly switched to your next game, right where you left off.

Compatibility is the last pillar to the Xbox Series X. Players will get suppor for backwards compatible games, including improved boot and load times, more stable frame rates, higher resolutions and improved image quality. They didn’t just make your old games compatible, but your accessories, game saves, and even progression as well.

Not only that, the Xbox Series X has a system to enable cross generation multiplayer and a Smart Delivery feature. This means you only have to purchase a game title once, letting you play your game smoothly on any console you jump to.
