Sony Introduces PlayStation Bug Bounty Program; Offers up to US$50,000 as Reward

With the launch of the PlayStation 5 on the horizon, Sony has taken the initiative to launch a bug bounty program called “Vulnerability Rewards Program” (or VRP for short). This program aims to encourage security researchers to hunt potential major bugs and exploits on the PlayStation Network and PlayStation 4 console. The company is also offering monetary rewards of up to US$50,000 in this program.

Security researchers are incentivised to aid Sony is finding and reporting any major bugs and exploits that may harm the PlayStation Network and related websites; as well as its PS4 gaming console, official accessories and operating system. To be more precise on the monetary reward, Sony is said to be offering between US$100 and US$50,000, depending on the ‘gravity’ of the bug or exploit.

Sony’s Vulnerability Rewards Program is being managed by HackerOne, which is a platform that hosts bug bounty programs for large corporations. That aside, bug bounty programs aren’t exactly new; Apple, in the past, ran a public bounty program with rewards of up to US$1 million.

Speaking of which, Sony stated that the Vulnerability Rewards Program has already been made available to select security researchers since last year.
