It looks like a handful of early adopters of Nvidia’s RTX 3080 are reporting issues with the graphics card when playing games. To be more specific, several consumers have reported that some games frequently crashes to the desktop when running a factory-overclocked custom RTX 3080.
RTX 3080 Overclock May Cause Game Crashing Issues
Several users have been flocking well-known tech-based forums like LinusTechTips and Overclockers UK and ComputerBase forums reporting their issues with the said Nvidia graphics card. It should be noted that not all custom RTX 3080 graphics cards are affected by this issue (at least they haven’t been widely reported yet). Custom graphics cards that have been reported to face game crashing issues to date are Zotac RTX 3080 Trinity and MSI RTX 3080 Ventus 3X OC. Furthermore, users on Nvidia, Tom’s Hardware, Tweaker and Reddit forums have also reported issues with the MSI Gaming Trio RTX 3080 and EVGA’s custom RTX 3080 as well.
It’s currently unknown as to why this issue is occurring. Folks at ComputerBase have contacted custom board manufacturers to provide more explanation; although there doesn’t seem to be any reply as of yet. It will indeed be very damaging (financially) if manufacturers were forced to recall all affected custom RTX 3080 graphics cards if the cause of the issue was found to be due to malfunctioning hardware—let’s hope it doesn’t come to this.
Regardless, if you are facing this issue, it’s recommended (unofficially) to manually downclock the graphics card by around 50Mhz to 100Mhz. Should you be hesitant to do this, it’s best to wait for your graphics card’s respective manufacturer to provide a genuine solution.
