Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass Unveiled

Pokemon sword and shield expansion

GameFreak has announced the Expansion Pass for both Pokemon Sword and Shield. Now, this is a first for the Pokemon series, which isn’t very GameFreak like.

These Expansion Passes bring two new areas into the game, called The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. They will be coming in June 2020 and Fall 2020 respectively.

Rather than having stopgap generations like Black 2 and White 2, or Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, producer Junichi Masuda implies that these expansion passes for Pokemon Sword and Shield will replace those. One benefit that comes out of this is that players will be able to access new content without having to restart the entire game.

Pokemon Sword And Shield Expansion Pass

That being said, there’s no stopping GameFreak from releasing a third title for the Sword and Shield series, like Emerald was from the Ruby and Sapphire era. If it did, maybe it would be called “Pokemon Spear”? You saw it here first.

Apart from just the new areas, we will also see more than 200 previous generation Pokemon making their return to Sword and Shield. This list will also include the other two first generation starters, and nearly every legendary in the series. But, that seems a bit hypocritical from Masuda’s statement back in E3 2019 about not being able to bring back the older Pokemons.

Pokemon Home February 2020

However, those who don’t want to get the expansion passes, they will still be getting a free title update to bring back the old Pokemons into Sword and Shield. That being said, this can only be done via trades with those who have the expansion or via the Pokemon Home service – a sequel to the Pokemon Bank, which allows you to bring in all your previous pokemon to the current generation.

Pricing and Availability

Pokemon Sword and Shield will each have their own individual passes. If you have both games, you will need to purchase two separate passes. Priced at US$29.99 each, they are already up for pre-purchase. As for Pokemon Home, it will be launched in February.
