Just when you thought Nvidia will cool down releasing high-end graphics cards, another rumour pops up. This time round, the company is said to be planning to release a 20GB VRAM version of the RTX 3080. For those who may remember, the current RTX 3080 graphics card has 10GB GDDR6X video memory.
Nvidia RTX 3080 20GB Edition
According to folks at VideoCardz, Nvidia’s internal roadmap suggests a 20GB model of the RTX 3080 due to the fact that the “PG132 SKU 20” board design was being referenced in the document. What’s not included in the said roadmap, however, is the potential launch date for the RTX 3080 20GB. Another key indicator which adds further weight to this ‘speculation’ is the fact that Nvidia clearly states “GeForce RTX 3080 10GB Founders Edition” in its internal document. Whilst, at first glance, this may not be at all significant, it should be noted that other graphics card SKUs were not listed with their respective VRAM capacity—interesting indeed.
Furthermore, it makes some sense for Nvidia to release a second variant of the RTX 3080 given that AMD is expected to release a 16GB Radeon RX6000 series graphics card based on the company’s ‘Big Navi’ GPU. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how both aforementioned graphics card will perform against each other; especially if they come with relatively similar pricing. That being said, we wonder how consumers who have bought/pre-ordered the 10GB variant of this graphics card will react should this rumour materialise.
Regardless, our dear readers should still take this rumour with a grain of salt, especially since it’s merely a speculative guess at this point. We’ll be sure to update you with even more information in the coming weeks regarding this should there be any official announcements made by Nvidia.
