Rumour: Nvidia Cancels RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB Graphics Cards Plan

RTX 30

Around a month ago, we wrote an article regarding rumours of Nvidia potentially launching a 20GB version of the RTX 3080 graphics card (apparently there were plans to release a RTX 3070 16GB SKU as well). Well, it seems that while there may have been plans to release both of the aforementioned graphics card versions, Nvidia has reportedly put a halt to its plans to debut other RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 SKUs.

The aforementioned rumour was reported by folks at VideoCardz, and the publication has mentioned that the reasoning for the cancelation of the RTX 3080 20GB SKU may likely be caused by low GGDR6X (memory controller) production yields. Meanwhile, the reasoning for the cancelation for the RTX 3070 16GB edition remains unknown—although it could likely be caused by discrepancies in the supply chain as well.

It’s important to note that Nvidia and its board partners have never officially mentioned or even hinted at the possibility of launching more powerful versions of both the RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 graphics cards; which means, technically, both parties will not be affected significantly by the alleged cancelation of the aforementioned graphics card SKUs.

That being said, the cancelation of these graphics cards may also be an effort to remedy the impact that is being caused by the shortages of both the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 (and possibly even the RTX 3070). Either way, the launch of the RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB may still happen, but judging from the rumour, it may not happen in the near future.
