Microsoft Officially Announces Xbox Series S and Series X Consoles; Priced at US$299 and US$499 Respectively 5

Update: Microsoft has just announced the pricing and date of availability for the more powerful Xbox Series X console as well. According to the company, the Xbox Series X will be open for pre-order starting 22 September and will be released from 10 November onwards. This console will come with a price tag of US$499 (about RM2,081). Check out our previous article to know more about the specifications of the Xbox Series X.

Microsoft has, rather unexpectedly, announced its second next-gen console called the “Xbox Series S.” Interestingly, the announcement came after a teaser for the console was leaked by Twitter user “WalkingCat.” The Xbox Series S is, by design, a less-powerful and less-bulky sibling of the beefier Xbox Series X—it was codenamed Lockhart before. The aforementioned console will launch with a price tag of US$299 (about RM1,240).

Microsoft dubs the Xbox Series S as the smallest Xbox ever (60% smaller compared to Xbox Series X). Design-wise, the upcoming console looks rather similar to the previous Xbox One S, albeit with a ‘striking’ black and round cooling vent located on top of the console. Despite the smaller form factor, Microsoft did mention that the console will still be capable of next-gen gaming performance.

Twitter user “WalkingCat” has posted a leaked video showcasing the Xbox Series S’ technical specs. According to this video, the console will be capable of 1440P gaming at 120FPS, 4K upscaling (for games) and media playback, along with support for DirectX raytracing. Furthermore, it was also said that the upcoming next-gen console will be equipped with a custom 512GB NVME SSD.

It will be interesting to see the performance difference between the Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X. Both consoles are expected to, at the very least, offer a big step-up (framerate-wise) compared to the older Xbox consoles. Either way, we’ll just have to wait and see.
