Apple Releases New MacBook Pro 13; Priced From RM5,599

Just six months after the introduction of the MacBook Pro 16, Apple also brought in the new MacBook Pro 13 to the mix. Apart from just the hardware specs upgrade, the MacBook Pro 13 also has some cosmetic upgrades as well. It now uses the Magic Keyboard in place of the butterfly switch keyboard, and you get a Touch Bar rather than a physical ESC key as standard.

The new MacBooks all feature Intel’s 10th generation quad-core Intel Core processors. That being said, the lower-specced options still run on a quad-core 8th gen unit. You can customise the MacBook Pro with up to 32GB of LPDDR4X RAM (3733MHz), and up to 4TB of SSD storage.

For its screen, the MacBook Pro 13 has a 13.3-inch IPS display that is capable of 2560 x 1600 resolution and 500 nits peak brightness. Graphics wise, it uses an integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics which Apple claims to deliver up to 80% faster performance than the previous generation MacBook Pro 13. These performance are measured on tasks like video editing, rendering, and gaming. Coupled with Apple’s Pro Display XDR, it can also push 6K resolution.

Connectivity wise, on the low spec version you’ll get two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, while the high spec version gets you a total of 4 Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C ports. Apart from that, the MacBook Pro 13 also utilises a T2 security chip that protects your Touch ID information, and gives you on-the-fly data encryption for your SSD storage.

Additionally, the laptop also has a 720p FaceTime HD webcam, and stereo speakers that support Dolby Atmost playback. On the side, you still get a 3.5mm audio jack with 3-mic array with directional beam forming.

Sidecar Feature

The MacBook Pro 13 runs macOS Catalina right out of the box, complete with the Continuity and SideCar features, which allow you to turn your iPad into a secondary screen for your MacBook. Apple claims that the laptop can last for up to 10 hours on a full charge. The laptop measures 1.4KG in weight, and 1.56cm in thickness.

Pricing and Availability

The MacBook Pro 13 will be priced starting from RM5,599 for the base model which runs on a 1.4GHz quad-core 8th generation Intel Core i5 processor, with 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 256GB of SSD. For students who are eligible to get Apple’s student pricing, you can get the same variant for RM5,169.

The higher spec version on the other hand starts from RM7,999 with a 2.0GHz quad-core 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor with 16GB LPDDR4X RAM, and 512GB of SSD. The laptop is already listed on Apple Malaysia’s official website, but it isn’t available for purchase at the moment.
