LinkedIn App Found Copying iOS Clipboard Data

LinkedIn

It seems that even seemingly safe apps like LinkedIn can have privacy flaws as well. Twitter user, DonCubed, has recently discovered that the iOS LinkedIn app is copying the contents of users clipboard; every keystroke is apparently being recorded by the app.

LinkedIn iOS App Clipboard Snooping Issue

Interestingly, the issue came to light largely due to a feature in Apple’s iOS 14 whereby a popup will appear to let users know when an app is reading content from the clipboard. Alarmingly, the iOS LinkedIn app wasn’t only ‘snooping’ on keystrokes from the primary device it was on, it was found to be recording a macOS clipboard as well—possible through Apple’s Universal Clipboard feature.

A LinkedIn representative has recently spoken to ZDNet and mentioned that the clipboard issue was merely a bug and was not intentional. The company’s VP Engineering of Consumer Products have responded to the clipboard recording issue recently, saying that it’s due to a ‘bad code’ and that the app isn’t storing or transmitting any clipboard contents.

Thankfully, a fix for this issue has been made and released to iOS users in the new app update. Nonetheless, this discovery should serve as a reminder for all of us to be wary of the applications we are using and how our data is being used.
