Lenovo ThinkStation P620 Is The First Workstation To Boast AMD Threadripper Pro

Lenovo ThinkStation P620

Lenovo today announced the Lenovo ThinkStation P620, which is the company’s first workstation to feature AMD’s latest Threadripper Pro. The new workstation offers up to 64 core of up to 4.0GHz, complete with air-cooling.

The Lenovo ThinkStation P620 is positioned in between the single-slot P520 and dual-slot P720 workstations. Having AMD’s Threadripper Pro, the machine is capable of supporting up to 128 lanes of PCIe 4.0 bandwidth, 8-channel memory of up to 1TB of DDR4 3200MHz through 8 DIMM slots, and it even is capable of delivering 20% more performance when compared to Intel-based dual CPU workstations, according to Lenovo.

When it comes to storage, the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 has up to 4TB of M.2 PCIe SSD and up to 16TB of 3.5-inch SATA 7,200RPM HDDs, with full support for RAID0/1 for M.2 and 0/1/5/10 for SATA configurations. Graphics wise, it can support up to two Nvidia Quadro RTX8000 or four Quadro RTX4000 cards. Connecting to displays, it can handle up to 16 of them, with up to a 96GB frame buffer.

Housed in a 33L tower chassis, the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 has air-cooling onboard too. Lenovo worked with AMD to come up with a new channel cooling system within the chassis, together with a custom heat-sink for the Threadripper CPU. Both companies agreed that this was the best way to avoid relying on liquid-cooling, which is mostly found on high-end consumer Threadripper systems.

  • 4 x USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 2
  • 2 x USB Type-A 2.0
  • 1 x PS/2 Port
  • 1 x RJ45 10 Gigabit Ethernet Port
  • 1 x Audio Line-In
  • 1 x Audio Out
  • 1 x Microphone In

On top of that, there is a also a 15-in-1 media card reader included. Powering the beast of a workstation is a 1,000W power supply unit.
