Intel Next Generation 7nm CPUs Delayed to 2022/2023

Intel

It looks like we’ll have to wait considerably longer before getting our hands on Intel’s 7nm-based processors. The company, in its Q2 2020 earnings release notes, have stated that its 7nm-based CPU product timing is shifting approximately six months from expected release. For those who may not be aware, the planned release date for Intel’s 7nm CPUs was initially at the end of 2021—but now it seems it’ll be pushed to 2022 instead (possibly even 2023).

Intel have mentioned that yields for its 7nm process is the main factor for the delay. The CPU maker further stated that based on recent data, its 7nm process is now 12 months behind schedule. The company’s CEO, Bob Swan, expressed his dissatisfaction with regards to this delay, saying that he is “not happy” with the performance of the company’s 7nm process.

That being said, the CPU giant is still expected to release its much-anticipated 10nm “Tiger Lake” and “Alder Lake” processors in the coming months. Those aside, it seems rather disappointing that Intel is still lacking behind when it comes to the ‘process technology’ war, when compared to AMD. The latter company had recently launched its Ryzen 4000 G-Series desktop processors, which are based on the 7nm process.
