Grab system captured that through MCO, Malaysian community became more appreciative towards front-liners that work hard to serve them. We noticed individuals posting stories on social media expressing their gratitude to frontliners.

In Grab, the system tracked users tipping over RM2.4 million throughout the movement control period. Here’s what they found about the community’s tipping habit on their platform:

Tipping on the Grab platform grew by over 75%!

Malaysians showed their appreciation to their Grab driver and delivery riders during this period with a 75% increase in tips given compared to before the movement control began. In fact, one user was so generous he gave a RM500 tip! Here’s what the user had to say:

This driver was delivering a package for me, and even though it was difficult to find my location, he remained calm throughout. What motivated me to tip him that much came down to one simple act – to show gratitude and thanks to our neighbours. It doesn’t matter what your profession or circumstances are, we all can help lift each other up. It just takes one act of random kindness. And secretly, if you give a tip through the app, the driver or rider won’t be able to refuse too! Grab user

Klang Valley generated the most tips and Kuala Terengganu received the highest average tips per Grab booking!

Grab noticed that the users in Klang Valley were the most frequents tippers, with more than RM 160,000 among all states. While Kuala Terrenganu users was most generous with the highest tipping value per booking in the country.

1 in every 30 bookings received a tip!

Every 1 in 30 bookings across the platform were tippied as compared to before the MCO was commenced where its was 1/100 bookings for a tip. On average, Grab mentioned that Malaysians spend more than RM 30,000 a day giving tips to their drivers or delivery rider.

The service with the most tips was GrabFood!

Delivery riders for GrabFood received the most amount of tips (more than RM 2 Million) during the MCO period. While before the MCO begun, GrabRide bookings usually receive most amount of tips.

It is noticeable that the covid-19 pandemic has change the way Malaysian’s look at giving tips as they become more appreciative while keeping frontliners in their thoughts and minds.

Grab has also received feedback that many users that wants to tips their drivers or delivery partners missed the opportunity to do so due to the interface. Encouraged by the users, Grab recently launched a new feature to enable in-transit tipping where users get to tip their drivers or riders before the job is completed.
