Edifier TWS NB2 Earbuds Review: Punchy Bass With ANC

Edifier TWS NB2 Review

The Edifier TWS NB2 comes with active noise cancellation (ANC) and up to 32 hours of battery life for the price of RM349. With that price, it is a serious offering and one we cannot resist to review. This is what we have to say about Edifier’s latest TWS earbuds, the Edifier TWS NB2.

Tested with Samsung Galaxy S20+

There’s the earbuds themselves and its charging case, but what you also get is a denim-like protective pouch, extra eartips, and a USB Type-C cable. You have everything you need here to get the right fit for your ears, and to protect your charging case from being scuffed.

Design

Edifier TWS NB2 Earbuds Review: Punchy Bass With ANC 14

The Edifier TWS NB2 is a large pair of TWS earbuds. They’re not at all low profile, and they want to be seen when you wear them. I don’t blame the company because the size doesn’t affect the comfort (more on that later), and it actually looks good on your ears. The design is somewhat a mix of an AirPod Pro that is in-ear, and it has these large stems on the side that has an edgy feel to it.

Even though it’s made entirely out of plastic, the Edifier TWS NB2 has a premium feel to it, probably because the stem has a smooth grey finish to it. Also, the bottom half of the stem is the touch gesture area, and the eartips can be swapped out if you feel they’re a bit loose.

As for the charging case, it has a pebble design and is made with faux leather material. To be honest, it looks and feels really nice in the hands. I know it’s fake leather, but the silver Edifier logo in the middle really accentuates the entire luxurious aesthetics. The lid has a groove for easier opening of the case, and the back is where you’ll find the USB Type-C charging port. Inside the case itself, there’s a charging status light and a button for pairing and switching devices.

Comfort

After wearing it for almost the entire day, the Edifier TWS NB2 has never made me feel any fatigue at all. I’ve never felt any pain at all and even with the large stems, it’s angled at a distance from the side of your face so it doesn’t annoy you. That’s good because when I first unboxed the earphones, I thought the stems would be annoying, but I’m glad Edifier proved me wrong in that aspect.

The Edifier TWS NB2 earbuds are comfortable, and it stays in place. I brought it out for a quick jog, headbang to a few EDM and rock songs, the NB2 managed to stay in my ears the entire time.

User Experience

Edifier TWS NB2 Earbuds Review: Punchy Bass With ANC 18

The Edifier TWS NB2’s pairing process was smooth and quick. I just had to pair it on my smartphone’s Bluetooth settings page and I was ready to listen to some music.

I’ve never once experienced audio hiccups or lost connection from one earbud to the other. Regardless if my phone is in my bag or my pocket, the connections stays strong and that’s great.

The Edifier TWS NB2 features hybrid active noise cancellation. What this means is that it uses ambient sound captured by the built-in micrphones to cancel out noise. Despite it using an in-ear design, I could still hear a faint bit of my environment when ANC is on. Standing 0.5m away from a running hair dryer with the volume at 50%, I can still hear a bit of buzz, but not a single word of what the person is saying. Turn the volume up louder, and all environment noise is gone.

The Edifier TWS NB2 also has an ambient mode built in. It’s supposed to pick up environment sounds and play it in your ear while your music is playing. With the NB2, you can even adjust the volume of the ambient sound. and there are three levels to it, but the microphone picks up sound as is and doesn’t boost it into your ears. The music playing will still drown out the environment sound, but this is something that can easily be fixed with a firmware update.

For gaming, Edifier included a gaming mode which reduces the latency to improve audio sync between the earbuds and your device. This works really well, so if you’re watching a video or gaming, there is no audio delay at all. You can switch to it by double tapping on the left earbud, or directly turning it on by double tapping on both earbuds.

Also, when you activate or disable ANC and Ambient Sound, the voice prompt would pause the music being played. I didn’t really like this, cause I wished the voice prompt would just play over the music instead.

Edifier Connect App – Version 6.0

The Edifier TWS NB2 can also be paired with the companion app, Edifier Connect. Apart from the usual status monitoring, you can tune quite a few things with the app. Upgrading from version 5.9 to 6.0 through the app, you get the additional widget in the notification bar so you have quick access to some of the app features – ANC, Ambient Mode, Game Mode, Launch app. And I like that when you put the earbuds away, the widget in the notification bar goes away too.

Within the app, you can activate/deactivate ANC and Ambient Mode from the app. You can view and control the music that’s playing, but you’re better off changing music from your music player directly.

In settings, you can do several things like:

  • Read user manual
  • Disconnect Bluetooth
  • Re-pair
  • Change voice prompts volume
  • Edit wear detection behaviour
  • Alter tap sensitivity
  • Timed shutdown
  • Turn off earbuds
  • Turn on/off game mode
  • Perform factory reset

That’s quite a list of things you can do with an app. But that being said, the app is missing several features that would’ve made the earbuds even better. For one, it’s lacking EQ profiles. The sound you’re hearing is the only default EQ profile available, and if you want to tune your music, you’d need a third party equalizer app.

Touch Gestures

Next, notice there’s no setting to let you change your touch gestures? The touch gestures are fixed and here’s the list of touch gestures available on the Edifier TWS NB2.

Sampling Song List

  • Hardwell Feat. Cascada – Everytime We Touch (Remix)
  • Mura Masa – Lotus Eater
  • Billie Eilish Feat. Blackbear – Ocean Eyes (Remix)
  • Beauz – Count The Hours (Extended Mix)
  • Joyner Lucas Feat. Logic – ISIS
  • Lisa – Gurenge (The First Take)
  • Lisa – Gurenge

The Edifier TWS NB2 has decent audio performance where the highs can tend to be a little messy at high volumes, and there’s this slight buzzing sound in the background. It’s very faint, but if you turn the volume all the way up, you can hear it a little.

The mids are actually great, so vocals come out crisp and clear. This is great for acoustics and songs that focus more on the singer’s voice. For the lows, the bass is superb and clean. Each thump can be heard clearly, and it doesn’t drown out the highs and mids. Soundstage is quite impressive, and somewhat balanced.

Call Quality

Call quality is decent on the Edifier TWS NB2. Conversations are loud and clear, with minimal background noise even in noisy environments. I could hear a clear voice coming in, and the receiver could clearly hear my voice too from my end.

Battery Life

Edifier TWS NB2 Earbuds Review: Punchy Bass With ANC 28

On a single charge with the volume set around 50% to 60% and ANC on, I could get about 6 hours and 30 minutes of music playback. The battery life can be extended if you listen at lower volumes and with ANC off.

It’s also a big plus that it uses Bluetooth v5.0 and charges via USB Type-C instead of microUSB. That way, less battery is used and charging it back up takes minimal time.

Conclusion

Edifier TWS NB2 Earbuds Review: Punchy Bass With ANC 29

For RM349, the Edifier TWS NB2 are a great pair of TWS earbuds that comes with active noise cancelling. The audio is great, and the overall user experience is decent. The app has room to improve, which can easily be done through a firmware update.

For the price alone, the Edifier TWS NB2 is a great choice for anyone looking to pickup a pair of TWS earbuds with ANC.
