We Got Tired of GrabFood, So We Tried Dahmakan

dahmakan review

Working from home, I’ve been spending most of my time working and having back to back meetings. I haven’t had much time to prepare, let alone cook a meal for my family, so we’ve been ordering from GrabFood for a while now. Last night, I was watching this Japanese drama called “Midnight Diner” and the food shots from the show made me think about what I should have for lunch the next day.

For some reason, I remembered Dahmakan. Previously, I have seen some of their ads, where influencers would open up their food boxes and show what they got for lunch and dinner. I even have friends who were Dahmakan regulars. So, I decided to download the app and I got to ordering.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post, just an honest review from a hungry (sometimes hangry) tech journalist.

Dahmakan App

Opening up the app, it’s really user friendly and everything was natural and intuitive. You have the delivery address and time slot located on the top, followed by the menu of the day. You can even choose to pre-order your meals for the next couple of days too. They categorize their meals into different cuisines:

  • Bestseller
  • Malay
  • Japanese
  • Asian
  • Chinese
  • Fusion
  • Western
  • Sides
  • Drinks
  • Desserts
  • and even Merchandise

Come, I can give you RM18 credit. Just use my code there. 😉

Before ordering, I was offered a RM5 off on my first order with the code “FIRST5” and I thought “Wow, that’s great, cause I don’t have to go hunting for codes.” Dismissing the notification, I stumbled upon the “Share Dahmakan” offer to give a friend RM18 and get RM24 for myself. I tried it out by sending a referral code to my wife, but it didn’t work. She opened the link, registered herself and logged in, but nothing happened for the both of us. So i thought, it’s alright cause I still have the RM5 off from before, so I proceed to ordering food for the next day’s lunch.

Food Ordering

Looking at the menu, the app looks beautiful and the food shots look super enticing. I wanted to try them all, but most of the food items were already out of stock, even for the next few days (maybe they’re THAT popular, reminds me of those hype shoe drops). Me and my wife limit ourselves to just one main dish each. Here’s what we ordered:

Dahmakan app

We went for the bundles, just to have an extra taste of the other food items Dahmakan has to offer. Ayam Goreng Berempah was only RM2 as an add-on to our meal, so we went for it since it was RM6 off than ordering ala carte. The order came up to RM52.93 (with the RM5 discount) and since this was our first time ordering, we paid with the online banking method and there were no problems at all. Things were looking good!

Delivery

Dahmakan app

Delivery was RM3, which is pretty cheap compared to the usual RM5 you’d get on GrabFood. We opted for the 12 to 12.30pm time slot, but when the clock struck 12, there wasn’t any notification that my order was being prepared/delivered (this might be my phone’s fault).

But once I entered the app, the food was being prepared and it shows that there will be a delay. The rider was friendly, but the order arrived at 12.48pm, which was 18 minutes later than the maximum time promised. We had a meeting to attend to at 1.30pm, so the wait was a bit nervous for us.

Food Taste

When we opened the plastic bag, everything looks very presentable. Each food item was nicely packaged with their own sticker labels stating who the food is for and what food item was in them.

Sorry, we don’t have the images of the packaging, because we were so hungry we forgot to take them.

Ayam Goreng Berempah, Bertukar!

Dahmakan app food
No, this obviously isn’t Nasi Goreng Ayam Berempah, duh.

That being said, when we opened the food boxes, we noticed that the portion was a bit small for the price, and the Ayam Goreng Berempah decided to transform into cocktail sausages instead. If the chicken ran out of stock and they wanted to replace it with the sausages, I would’ve preferred if they “cocktail” me about it first. As for the taste, it tastes like the usual frozen packaged cocktail sausage you’d get from supermarkets.

Nam Chin Chicken

Dahmakan app food

The Nam Chin chicken only had six mini pieces of chicken that had a paper-like texture, and the white rice was two to three times the portion of the chicken. I could’ve finished the 6 pieces of chicken in 6 bites, but not the rice.

The Nam Chin sauce however, is the bomb. It’s sweet, spicy, and has a very fragrant smell to it. It’s got a great tangy flavour too when it hits your tongue, and I’ll be honest I’m a fan. I just wished they could’ve increased the portion of the chicken so I’d have more to use the Nam Chin sauce with. We’ll be re-purposing the sauce for the grilled chicken chop we had planned to cook for dinner later.

Hawaii Chicken Pizzagne

Dahmakan app food

Now, this. The Hawaii Chicken Pizzagne which is supposed to be a mix of Hawaiian Chicken Pizza and Lasagne. It looks really good. My wife had a try first and she commented that it had a lot of great flavour. She finished half of it so I took the remaining half. Once I was done, she reminded me that it was Hawaiian Chicken so I thought “Where’s The Pineapple?” I don’t remember eating any bits of pineapple, but she said there was pineapple, just very little pieces. Overall, I enjoyed the blast of flavours in the Pizzagne, but they could’ve improved on the portion (and pineapples cause I didn’t get them).

Longan Tofu

The longan tofu should be the same longan tofu sold in a small “Yum Tong Shui” kiosk in Jaya One. It tastes alright, not too sweet, but the tofu wasn’t as smooth as expected. We’re big fans of longan tofu, and there’s another longan tofu from a Pan Mee place nearby that tasted much better.

Soya Drink // Teh O Ais Limau

The soya drink tasted pretty good, as the soya bean wasn’t drowned out by the sugar. But when it comes to the teh o ais limau, me and my wife asked the same thing in our heads – “Where’s the limau?”. We chuckled when we asked the question, and wondered where the lime went. It was a very LMAO moment, geddit? The sticker was labelled “teh o ais limau” but it tasted more like “teh o ais” instead.

Customer Support

Dahmakan app

We did contact Dahmakan’s customer support (which was easy to find) about the Ayam Goreng Berempah. We texted them at 12:52pm and got a reply at 12:56pm, which is fast. The lady apologized and mentioned that a direct solution cannot be provided at the time, but a ticket will be created for the respective team to reply within 4 hours. I have not heard back from them since.

Conclusion

Our first experience with Dahmakan may not the best first experience, but we’ll definitely be trying some other food items on the menu in the future. The wife has been wanting to try the Nasi Kerabu Ayam Goreng Berempah, and I’ve got my eyes on the Baked Chicken Ala King Rice.

The app looks great, and the menu is a breath of fresh aroma from the usual GrabFood stores we have in our area.
