The Canon Pixma TR150 exists for those who need documents printed on-the-go. It’s impossible to carry a full sized printer with you all day, but the Pixma TR150 has been minimized enough to fit into your daily briefcase, backpack, or messenger bag too. This allows you to carry almost all the features of a full-sized printer, without worrying about power or print performance.
What Is The Canon Pixma TR150?
The Canon Pixma TR150 is a small and light portable wireless printer that is the successor to the iP100 printer. Weighing just 2.3KG and 66mm thin, the Pixma TR150 can print up to A4 sized documents and has a 1.44-inch OLED monochrome display for guidance. It even charges via USB Type-C and can support multiple methods of wireless printing.
The Pixma TR150 has the unique ability to create and save up to five templates in the printer itself like, applications, consent forms, flyers, and more. All these can be printed directly from the printer’s control panel once you’ve saved them in.
For the control panel, you’ll find a 1.44-inch OLED monochrome display, with the power button, cancel button, arrow keys, pairing button, back and ‘OK’ button.
The Pixma TR150 also connects via Wi-Fi on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels. Apart from that, it also supports the stand USB connection, which can be found behind the battery pack. This means if you were to use it with your laptop/PC, you’d need to remove the battery pack and use AC power instead.
Canon rates the Pixma TR150 to have a maximum duty cycle of 500 prints, and the rear tray is capable of holding 50 sheets of plain paper up to legal size (A4 – 8.5″ x 14″).

Who Is This For?
The Canon Pixma TR150 is for the working professional who is constantly on-the-go and needs documents printed on the spot. It is also great for those moments when you’ve forgotten to print or bring a document with you to a meeting. The TR150 can also find its home in home offices and with families who just need an occasional print job here and then.
Because of how portable it is, you can leave all the forms back in the office and print a fresh copy according to what your client needs. This rids you of the need to fumble through different folders to find the right form/document.
Setting up the Canon Pixma TR150 is straightforward, all you need to do is just plug the battery to the back of the printer, screw it in on both sides, and you’re ready to turn it on. If you want to operate it at full capacity, charge the printer first either with the charging adapter or via USB Type-C (your smartphone charger will do).
Next, is to download the CANON PRINT app on your smartphone. If you want to use it with your PC, just download the software on your laptop/desktop.
Pairing up with the Pixma TR150 did take a while, as I needed to first connect the printer to the Wi-Fi on the printer itself. Once connected, the printer would then be discoverable on my smartphone, then only I could start printing. Once the setup was done, printing isn’t any hassle. Just select a file, make sure paper is loaded in the rear tray, check print settings and hit ‘print’. To be honest, I thought the connection and printing process would be slow, but I’m glad that isn’t the case with the Pixma TR150.
Additionally, the Canon Pixma TR150 can also be voice-activated, through your smart home appliances.
How Does It Connect?
The Canon Pixma TR150 is made to be ready to print with almost any device, right out of the box. It can support a wide variety of Android and iOS devices including connectivity options like:
- Apple AirPrint
- Canon Print App
- Canon Print Service
- Canon Print Plug-In (Amazon Fire support)
- Creative Park
- Easy PhotoPrint Editor App
- Google Cloud Print
- Mopria Print Services
- Canon PosterArtist Lite App
You’re given a plethora of options to connect and print, and the Pixma TR150 is also compatible with your smart home appliances like Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, Windows’ Cortana, Apple’s Siri, Samsung Bixby, and also IFTTT scripting technology.
That being said, the Pixma TR150 doesn’t support direct printing from USB drives. But, it does support USB Type-C charging where a 10-minute charge lets you print up to an additional 36 pages.
How Does It Perform?
According to Canon, the Pixma TR150 can print up to 9 pages per minute for monochrome pages and 5.5ppm for colour prints. During our test, the printer printed a 10-page Microsoft Word document at a speed of 8.7ppm, where a 5-page colour print had a speed of 5.3ppm, which is a little bit short of Canon’s claims. It may be a little slower than conventional printers, but for a portable printer, those are rather good real-life print speeds.
The prints that come out of the output slot is great. Texts are legible with some misshaped texts here and there (usually small text), with the colour prints showing vivid colours and great preservation of details.
Also, unfortunately the TR150 doesn’t support auto-duplexing or auto dual-page printing. But what I do like, is that when you open up the rear tray, the output slot gets expanded too. I also like that there are screws on the back of the printer to keep the removable battery in place.
How Cost Efficient Is It?
For a low-volume printer like the Pixma TR150, they’re going to cost you more than the conventional printer and that’s the truth. But, what you benefit in return is great quality prints that can be printed practically anywhere.
- CLI-36 (Colour) 260 pages Ink Cartridge – RM102.60
- PGI-35 (Pigment Black) 200 pages Ink Cartridge – RM69.60
Colour prints would cost about RM0.39/page, while black and white prints would cost approximately RM0.34/page. If you were to max it out at 500 pages/month, that’s RM172.70 spent just on ink each month. Depending on how much you use it, your ink cost may vary. Perhaps you can use a conventional printer in the office, and the Pixma TR150 can be used for when you’re out and about. That way, the CLI-36 and PGI-35 cartridge should last you longer.
Desk Real Estate
The Canon Pixma TR150 doesn’t take up a lot of space, and it’s much smaller than the regular printers you have in the office. It’s about the size of five iPad Pros stacked on top of each other, and takes up about half of your passenger seat – a size that easily fits into your backpack or briefcase.
The Canon Pixma TR150 is a long overdue refresh of the Pixma iP110 portable printer. It’s got a smaller footprint, excellent print quality especially photos, a vast array of mobile connectivity options, custom templates right from the printer itself, and an optional detachable battery. It also uses the same ink cartridge as the Pixma iP110, so you can just use any unused inks if you’re upgrading from that to the TR150.
For the price of RM1,399, the Canon Pixma TR150 comes with 2 years Canon warranty, battery ready, and it’s a great printer for when you need to desperately print a document when you’re away from the office, or on a business trip with no access to a printer.
