The new Apple iPhone 12 series has finally been unveiled by the Cupertino giant, via its official livestream just hours ago. The new iPhone series brings about a number of improvements over its predecessor.
Apple iPhone 12 5G – Specifications
The Apple iPhone 12 series consists of four new variants:
- iPhone 12 Mini
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Max
Apple iPhone 12 5G
The Apple iPhone 12 series is of course powered by the latest Apple A14 Bionic processor. There are 11.8 billion transistors packed into the A14 Bionic processor, that’s built on the 5nm process. The new 6-core CPU also features the new 4-core GPU design to improve in Machine Learning, and Gaming. There’s also the 16-core neural engine, that can deliver 11 trillion operations per second.
For its display, the iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display. When it comes to gaming, the iPhone 12 promises console-quality games. Apple has worked with League of Legends: Wild Rift to fully take advantage of the new 4-core GPU performance. It’s really great that Apple is taking gaming more seriously, and more competitively.
In the camera department, the iPhone 12 has a new dual-camera system, which consists of a 12MP ultra-wide angle sensor, and a 12MP wide angle sensor. The new 7 element lens delivers 27% improvement in lowlight environments. Computational photography can offer better understandings of the environment and adjust it optimally. It also helps improve Night Mode, which is now available on the Ultra-wide angle sensor, and the selfie sensor on the front. When it comes to videography, there’s also the new Night Mode Time-Lapse introduced.
Wireless charging has also been improved on the iPhone 12. The company introduced MagSafe for iPhone, which allows the smartphone to be charged wirelessly at 15W speeds. With MagSafe, iPhone 12 can recognise the different wireless accessories that is attached onto the smartphone. There’s the MagSafe Wallet, MagSafe phone casing, MagSafe duo charger, and more.
To keep the iPhone safe from drops, Apple introduced ceramic shield glass coating on the iPhone 12’s chassis. Apple has also confirmed that the iPhone 12 series will not come with any charger or earphones, and that results in thinner packaging, which saves on materials used and reduces wastage.
Being the first Apple smartphone series to go beyond 4G, and introduce 5G connectivity, the Apple iPhone 12 has a smart data mode that automatically uses LTE to save battery. When 5G connection is required, it will activate automatically as well. It supports the mmwave module, and is capable of reaching 4.0Gbps peak download speeds in the most ideal situations.
Apple iPhone 12 Mini
The Apple iPhone 12 Mini is a 5.4-inch device which utilizes the Super Retina XDR display. On top of having the new Apple A14 Bionic and 5G connectivity, the device is also coated with the new Ceramic Shield for better protection. According to Apple, the iPhone 12 Mini is the world’s smallest, and thinnest 5G smartphone in the market.
Where colour is concerned, the Apple iPhone 12 and 12 Mini will be available in five striking colours – White, Black, Blue, Green, and (Product) RED.
Apple iPhone 12 Pro And 12 Pro Max
The Apple iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max has a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR displays respectively. It also gets an additional 12MP telephoto sensor with a 6 element lens, on top of the ones found from the iPhone 12. There’s also the new Apple ProRAW, which combines Raw photography that works together with the company’s new Computational Photography feature. Photos taken with Apple’s ProRAW can be edited directly from the phone’s Photos app itself, or on 3rd party photo editing apps.
For Pro Video, Apple is bringing HDR video recording with 10-bit high dynamic range. The device is also the first smartphone camera to record in Dolby Vision HDR, recording 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.
The triple camera system on the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max also has a LiDAR scanner, which was first found on the iPad Pro series. The iPhone now can detect light, depth mapping, and can offer better object recognition, better VR and AR placements, faster autofocus, speedier autofocus in lowlight, and more.
When it comes to colours, the Apple iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will be available in four colours – Pacific Blue, Gold, Graphite, and Silver. It also has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Pricing And Availability
The Apple iPhone 12 will be priced from $799, while the Apple iPhone 12 Mini will have a price tag starting from $699. As for the Pro variants, the Apple iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will be priced from $999 and $1,099 respectively.
Pre-orders for the Apple iPhone 12 will start on the 16th of October, whereas pre-orders for the iPhone 12 Mini will begin on the 6th of November. For the Pro variants, the 12 Pro will start pre-orders on the 16th of October, while the Pro Max’s pre-order will begin on the 6th of November. The new iPhones are expected to be available starting the 13th November 2020.

Older Apple devices will also get new price tags with the new Apple iPhone 12 series released. The Apple iPhone SE 2020 will just start from $399, iPhone XR to start from $499, while the Apple iPhone 11 will now start from $599.
