AMD 400 and 500-Series Motherboards To Support Ryzen 5000 CPUs

5000U

With the recent release of AMD’s Ryzen 5000 series CPUs, many consumers may be wondering: will older 400-series and current 500-series AM4 motherboards compatible with the new Ryzen processors? Well, there’s good news: AMD has confirmed that both 400 and 500-series motherboards will indeed be compatible with its upcoming, recently announced Ryzen CPUs.

AMD 400 And 500-Series Motherboards Compatible with Ryzen 5000 CPUs

Ryzen 5000

That being said, AMD did mention vaguely that the Ryzen 5000 CPU support would only be coming to ‘select 400 series motherboards’, which is interesting. For those who may remember, it was not too long ago that AMD stated that it won’t be providing support for Ryzen 5000 processors for 400-series AM4 motherboards. As evident from the recent announcement, the processor giant has backtracked from its original statement—perhaps due to the massive backlash from consumers.

Meanwhile, AMD recommends users to perform a BIOS upgrade with AGESA 1.1.0.0 or newer on their existing 500-series motherboards to ensure compatibility with Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. Consumers can expect this BIOS update to roll out from 5th November; although some board partners like MSI have said that the update will come by the end of October. Speaking of which, 400-series motherboard users can expect the BIOS update for compatibility to be released sometime in January 2021—a prolonged delay which is rather odd in our opinion.

Nevertheless, the announcement by AMD would no doubt be well received by the AMD faithfuls and soon-to-be Ryzen 5000 CPU owners. We do expect the 600-series motherboards to be announced by AMD’s board partners in the coming weeks; although this hasn’t been confirmed by neither the vendors or AMD itself.
