Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and 765 Unveiled at Snapdragon Summit

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865

Qualcomm has kicked off its annual Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii this morning, and the company has unleashed two new Snapdragon chips. This is done to showcase some insight into the processors that will be powering most of the smartphones in the coming year.

The star of the show are none other than the flagship Snapdragon 865 and the mid-range chip – Snapdragon 765. Following the trend, these chips are fully focused on 5G as well as AI. Seeing how important AI has become in the recent mobile ecosystem, we’re not surprised to see Qualcomm taking a leap further into the realms of artificial intelligence. Also, with 5G technology’s adoption rate, it’s bound to be a feature that will drive a majority of smartphone purchases in 2020.

The flagship Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform, which includes the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System, is the world’s most advanced 5G platform, delivering unmatched connectivity and performance for the next generation of flagship devices. The Snapdragon 765/765G brings integrated 5G connectivity, advanced AI processing, and select Snapdragon Elite Gaming experiences.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and 765 Unveiled at Snapdragon Summit 5

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 will have the separate X55 5G modem, while the mid-range 765 will have 5G as an integrated option. 5G will definitely be a constant in 2020, but manufacturers will likely continue to offer non-5G options in their smartphones to countries where telcos are slower to introduce the next-gen network.

As the Snapdragon Summit pans out over the next few days, more information will be shared on Qualcomm’s next generation of 5G-focused chipsets. We’ll also likely see the Snapdragon 865 and 765 be embedded in smartphones announced in CES and MWC in early January and late February respectively.

Qualcomm also introduced Sonic Max, which is a new fingerprint-scanning technology that has a much larger surface area for the in-display scanner. That’s 17x larger, according to Qualcomm’s statistics.
