Huawei Mate 30 Series: Everything You Need to Know 7

Performance

Both the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro share a few components. They both run on Huawei’s latest Kirin 990 processor equipped with 5G and an improved NPU for enhanced AI features. They also support the M-Pen, which comes from the Mate 20 X.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro features an all-new Horizon Screen, where its front glass has 88-degree curves on the sides. There isn’t any speaker cutout, so you’re getting the same under-screen speaker tech from the P30 Pro.

This time, Huawei removed the volume buttons altogether, and has opted for a touch sensitive solution. You can customise where you want the volume section to be and all you need to do is slide up and down on the sides to control the volume. Besides volume, you can also allocate gaming and camera buttons to the sides.

Both phones now have in-screen fingerprint sensors, but also comes with 3D face unlock for better security. Not only the Mate 30 Pro will get wireless charging, this time the Mate 30 will also receive the wireless charging feature. Wireless charging has been bumped up to 27W for faster recharging and reverse wireless charging is now three times faster than before. USB-C charging remains at 40W and the company is now offering a powerbank that delivers SuperCharge speeds, with an in-car wireless SuperCharger.

Cameras

In the brief specs list above, you’ve already seen the camera specs of the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro. They’re still using Leica lenses, and they are true to the rumors of being housed in a halo enclosure. Huawei claims that the twin 40MP cameras are to improve video recording and add new modes and features. The Cine camera has an ultra-wide angle lens and a 1/1.54-inch sensor with a maximum 51,200 ISO. This helps capture video at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with extended dynamic range.

The phones are also able to capture low-light timelapse video in 4K resolution and shoot low-light photos. Huawei also added the feature to record video with real-time bokeh, making your shots look even more professional with those sweet blurry backgrounds. The other 40MP main camera uses the same 1/1.7-inch sensor as the P30 Pro with an RYYB sub-pixel arrangement. This helps the sensor capture 40% more light than before. Apart from that, the Mate 30 Pro also supports ultra slow-motion up to 7,680 frames per second, and we have to say, it looks brilliant.

Storage and Connectivity

If the storage on the base model isn’t enough for you, you can expand it via the company’s proprietary Nano Memory cards. The second slot on the phone can also be used to house a second SIM card, and both slots support 5G connectivity.

Does the Mate 30 Series run on Android?

Yes, the Huawei Mate 30 series does run on an open-source version of Android 10, but due to the current ban, it will not ship with Google’s core services like YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and the Google Play Store. Technically, you should be able to install these yourself, but it might not work as well as a phone that comes with these services right out from the box.

Huawei’s EMUI 10 is based on Android 10, so there isn’t any stark difference compared to previous models that are Google certified. EMUI 10 also introduces a plethora of features including an improved always-on screen, full fledged dark mode, AI gesture controls to control your phone without touching it, and HiCar for using the phone’s features in your car.

Price and Availability

The Huawei Mate 30 will start at €799 while the Mate 30 Pro will start from €1099. These prices are for the base models, should you wish to have more storage or 5G connectivity, you’ll have to fork out a bit more. That’s because the Mate 30 Pro will come in both 4G and 5G versions.

  • Mate 30 8GB + 128GB: €799
  • Mate 30 Pro 8GB + 256GB: €1099

The Huawei Mate 30 Series will be available in Emerald Green, Space Silver, Cosmic Purple, and Black. They feature a gloss-to-matt finish glass finish, with the matte portion making it less slippery. There are also two new options – Forest Green and Orange which have a ‘vegan leather’ rear cover.

Huawei Mate 30 RS Porsche Design

If the Mate 30 Pro isn’t luxurious enough for your lifestyle, Huawei has that covered. The company also announced the Huawei Mate 30 RS Porsche Design that is co-designed with the people at Porsche Design. It has the same power and performance from Mate 30 Pro, but packed in a more premium silhouette.

The halo camera design is swapped out for a racing stripe design down the middle of the back of the phone. It’s also wrapped in handcrafted premium leather that gives it a better feel compared to a glass black.
