Google Finally Releases Android 10 for Pixel Phones 5

Android has finally released the stable version of Android 10, which is the successor to Google’s Android 9 Pie that was released in 2018. The new and improved operating system includes a new naming convention, new branding, and of course new features.

A New Name

For many years since Android was first released, Google has used dessert names for each version of Android they put out – Froyo, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich etc. However, Google is letting of the dessert naming convention for Android and is just calling it “Android 10”.

The Android rebranding didn’t stop at just the naming. If you take a look at Android’s logo, there’s a slightly different font now and the “Bugdroid” character no longer has a body. Android’s mascot is only left with a head now.

Android 9 Pie focused a lot on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and improvements to the Google Assistant. This year, Android 10 will heavily invest in privacy and security. That being said, there are still fun quirky features in Android 10 for users to tinker with.

Android 10 Features:

  • System-wide Dark Mode: Converts the whole phone’s UI into Dark Mode to help your OLED-screen phone save even more battery.
  • Smart Replies: If you’re using Google messaging apps like Messages or Gmail, you’ll notice you’ll be given suggestions to complete your sentence so you could type less.
  • Overhauled Sharing Menu: Android 10’s sharing menu has been improved to look and function better for users to share anything across to anyone.
  • New Gesture Navigation Controls: Gesture navigation is now native on Android 10 and it’s supposed to help one-hand usability with large-screen phones. Should you prefer, you can still opt for the “three-button” system.
  • New Permissions Control: Rather than just allowing an app permission for good, you can now fine tune apps to have permission for a certain amount of time, or only when the app is open.
  • Security Updates on Play Store: Instead of waiting for the phone manufacturer to trickle down security updates for your phone, Google is now releasing them on the Play Store so users can get to updating immediately.

Android 10 is now being rolled out to all Google Pixel devices, including the lower-end Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL and much older Pixel and Pixel XL.

Non-Pixel Android devices will likely get the Android 10 update in the next few months, depending on how fast the phone manufacturer can churn it out.
